I wanted to get back into modding NHL 08 for the PS3, as the previous one I had kind of no longer exists as a result of the game hanging when I attempted to play a match. Unfortunately, quickBMS doesn't seem to like data1.big in particular, as it gives me this error whenever I even dare to extract it using the ea_big4.bms script. This has been going on for a while, and I'm not sure what's causing it. I heard it might be a refpack compression situation, but refpack.bms does nothing to help.

What doesn't help is that other programs I have used (fifafs, OSBigEditor, etc.) have also not worked; if the extraction DID work, RPCS3 would greet me with a fatal error. I want to be able to extract this one file WITHOUT the fatal error killing any and all hopes of playing the game on extracted files. Could someone please help me with this problem?

Seems encrypted or something. Both are jersey texlib files but the file in offset 00E10100 (where the script causes error) hex data is more concise looking compared to the first file in the archive which were decompressed right, so I therefore conclude that it's encrypted. There are some other files which causes same error too.

I'm not expert in encrypted/compressed files but I uploaded the file from the archive, if somebody want to take a look at it.
