Yes, ZAM files are used in X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance games as a 2D point cloud that dynamically draws the map as you uncover it. (Sorry, should have said something about it at marvelmods.com).

Just curious, what process did you go through to get the .obj? It may help us in making minimaps in the future?

i used Hex2obj to find the point cloud :D
here is monument2.zam with and without face indices

it looks garbled in the left side image but once you remove the stray triangles it looks quite nice :)
