I'm having a similar problem trying to extract upk files from a game called Nosgoth. I tried umodel but had similar errors, and Nosgoth is not in the list of priorities of umodel developer.

If I use offzip, I'm able to extract a bunch of dat files, but they don't seem to make sense at all, looks like the upk files are encrypted.
I know it is possible to develop an algorithm to decrypt those files, one guy on Steam forums was able to build an upk decryptor for Rocket League, a game developed by the same company that developed the Nosgoth game.

I have experience in C# and C so I could try to develop a tool if I know where to look for learning more about upk decryption.
Anyone knows where I can find some nice content to start learning about how to decrypt upk files?

Thanks!
