Question about using dragon_quest.bms script for Dragon Quest VIII PS2

I am trying to locate and dump the text from Dragon Quest VIII PS2 version. I extracted the files from the iso. I've tried using the dragon_quest.bms script on the large Data.dat and data.hd6 files but I don't think I'm doing it right. Do I need to unpack the .dat and .hd6 files first? If so, what is the right tool for that?
