Yes, there's a problem with the face indices. There's small groups of vertices (say 20..30 verts each) which look ok, but too many weird faces interconnecting them.

I divided a submesh of 800 vertices into 8 parts but each of them had the problem described above. 

edit: at the moment of writing I found it; don't use strips and,... just a moment

need to test it for the other submeshes

first submesh - needs to be split up into 2 or 3 sub submeshes, I guess

(Face index count: 16821, not 16500, btw)
